The world has passed the halfway mark for meeting the Millennium Development Goals — the 8 international development goals that 189 United Nations member states have agreed to achieve by the year 2015. The goals include halving extreme poverty and hunger, reducing maternal and child mortality rates, fighting diseases such as AIDS, sending all children to school and improving access to water and sanitation.

The Philippines is among those that are lagging behind its MDG targets. Rampant corruption in government, as well as lack of funds needed to meet the MDGs , pose a serious challenge for the country’s anti-poverty efforts. One thing you can do is to sign up and support the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP)’s 50-50 Campaign just CLICK HERE.

Poverty and hunger have increased in the Philippines. The economic gains boasted by the government benefit only the richest families in the country, contributing further to worsening inequality.

The continued rise in the cost of living, especially in light of the food and energy crisis, has caused a considerable decline in real income and increase in the severity of poverty. These past three years, millions of households experienced hunger. Latest official statistics show the absolute number of poor families has increased from 4 million to 4.7 million. Official statistics also show that 80% of the country’s poor are from the rural areas.

One in every 6 school-age children do not go to school; 6 out of 10 mothers die due to complications arising from pregnancy.

It is time to ACT NOW.

On October 17, we will join millions of people all over the world who will STAND UP and commit to TAKE ACTION against poverty and inequality. We pledge to do our share in poverty eradication — from waste segregation and energy conservation to writing letters to our local and national leaders and joining mass actions.

We want the government to make the same commitment. Listen to the people’s agenda: Ensure appropriate resource allocation for programs to eradicate poverty; observe transparency and public accountability in all trade negotiations; full implementation of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act; comprehensive debt audit,; repeal of automatic appropriation provision and non-payment of illegitimate debts; resume peace talks between GRP and MILF and immediate cessation of hostilities
A hunger-free Philippines is possible. And we need to ACT. NOW.

Team RP and FlippyKnows teams up for Blogger’s Night

Creating a change movement in the Philippines is not knew. There are hundred and if not thousand of organizations already advocating for social change but it seems change is not forthcoming that easily. Why is that? In my opinion it is because these groups fail to unite and see the similarities among one another and because of that they are not scratching the bigger problem that our country is facing. But hope never fades, just like what will be happening this October 10, 2008, Saturday at My Little Art Place in Greenhils.

Team RP and FlippyKnows is organizing the “TEAM RP-FLIPPYKNOWS BLOGGERS NIGHT.” on October 10. Team RP is a group of committed youth dedicated to making a change for the country while FlippyKnows is an online and on-site community where Filipinos all over the world converge to share creativity and technology with each other.

So bloggers this is the change to really start making a difference and meet other bloggers at the same time. Let us be part of not only blogging as a passion but blogging to make a difference.

Birth of Pinoy Blog Movement for Change and Action

I am new at WordPress and I wanted to try how different is blogging in WordPress is. The every first problem I encountered with creating this new blog is the blog title itself. What will I name this new blog about and what will I write in it. Then idea came and I decided to write about Pinoy Blogs and I guess personally tell my opinion about their blogs. I am not a top notch blogger but I guess I have the write to tell my opininon about what they write and perhaps Danilo Arao could also help me on this.

Pinoy are great bloggers and one of the finest in the world. Photomatt or Matt Mullenweg himself says that he cannot even decipher who is a Filipino blogger because their English is topnothc. That is indeed a great compliment from someone who is considered an authority in Weblogging, specifically WordPress.

Now, what do I have to offer? I would certainly have error in grammars in this blog for all I know but the thing is with your help we can make this happen. We can even create a Pinoy Blog Movement for Change and Action… hmmm this seems to be a good idea, although I am scared of starting a new thing again because well I have not proved myself yet to really create a difference.

But… oh well… we can start a virtual movement for change and action and perhaps through it create a ripple of change for our country. I will not aspire to be its leader but I will be glad to support a cause like this and would gladly invite everyone to take part in this idea.

So here begins the journey of the Pinoy Blog Movement for Change in Action… I might still change the name if you folks and fellow Pinoy Bloggers thinks it is a stupid and utopian idea. So don’t forget to leave that comment and bash my head.

Tacloban, a City of Change and Hope

For months now, a fellow member of Brotherhood of Destiny, Inc. (BROOD) and I were planning to go to the University of the Philippines in Tacloban to visit our organization’s chapter there but because our organization has limited funding and we ourselves cannot afford to go there we always postpone it.

When I see the Cebu Pacific Blogging Challenge, I see an opportunity that perhaps we will be given a chance to visit Tacloban and what better way to start this new and first ever WordPress blog of mine than with this post. I personally want to see Tacloban’s bustling nature, beaches, forest and the people who at a young age wanted to contribute to the change of this country. It is not recreation nor luxury that I want to go to Tacloban but pure passion to meet this young people from UP who are full of enthusiasm to create a difference for the Philippines.

Tacloban is a place of hope, a wonderful city, historic and bustling with business. It is the regional center of commerce, tourism, education, culture, and government in the region. It is one of the few first class cities in the Philippines (cities with an annual income of more than PhP300 million) and is slated to be declared as a highly urbanized city in 2008 (having exceeded the minimum qualfying standards in terms of income and population).

What could be a better way to start a chapter in the Visayas for any organization than this. A visit will grant us a dream which we hope to achieve in order to make a difference for our country. It is a dream that, I as a simple individual aspiring for change and perhaps could be fulfilled.

Tacloban and Leyte for that matter is one of the places to visit in the Philippines. Never doubt for one second if you will choose a destination to drop by and pick Tacloban City in Leyte and what better way to do that than via Cebu Pacific.
